What is Brain Health?

Brain health is foundational to how we think, feel, move, connect, and function in everyday life. The World Health Organization defines brain health as the state of brain functioning across cognitive, emotional, behavioral, sensory, and motor domains that allows individuals to realize their full potential throughout life.

Our brains are constantly working behind the scenes to support memory, attention, decision-making, mood, relationships, movement, resilience, and overall well-being. Brain health is not simply the absence of disease—it reflects how well the brain is functioning across many aspects of life, including cognitive and emotional wellness.

Research shows that brain health is influenced by many factors throughout the lifespan, including physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress, mental health, social connection, lifelong learning, medical care, and the environments in which we live and work. Many of these factors are modifiable, meaning there are meaningful steps people can take to support brain health at every age.
